Such is the case in The Chrysalids by John Wyndham; the residents of the book's setting, Waknuk, are forced to trust that any being which is not completely normal is known as a mutant, and should be removed from society. Waknuk is a very rigid community, and its particular inhabitants are compelled to maintain numerous stiff beliefs.
