PREFACE

Greek engineering is mostly undervalued, sometimes to the point of being overlooked, or overlooked in householder's minds and writings. Each of our understanding of Greek society is definitely incomplete if we know nothing of the methods by which the Greeks resolved significant concerns of the common everyday selection, like getting and distributing drinking water, and also the architecture of families, temples, or perhaps other significant buildings. Lots of the tools, strategies, and system designs of today originate from old Greece. From this you will be able to appreciate Greek architectural through superb Greek jobs. The different kinds of architecture and tools that were used way too long ago are perfect and complicated, as well as the mathematics and computations that were realized at that time. They are only a few types of Greek Anatomist, imagine how many more amazing feats they constructed. THE TUNNEL OF EUPALINOS

One particular extraordinary job of Greek engineering was the tunnel of Eupalinos. The tunnel was dug inside the sixth century BC throughout the base of Mt Kastro, a 237-mile high huge batch. It was dug to bring water from a spring, now called Agiades, on the north side of Kastro, into the city of Samos, on the southern region side from the mountain. The tunnel is definitely 1, 040 meters long and is roughly square for 1 . almost 8 meters large and large. The water plumbing are over the east wall structure I a channel sloping downward through the north towards the south end. (7, 405) One interesting bit of information would be that the tunnel was dug from both ends and achieved in the middle. Which will brings an interesting question to mind. How do they find the same positioning so the two tunnels met head on? They knew water was to stream by gravity, therefore the route had to have a slope. Therefore the level of the conduit from your spring determined the level of the tunnel with the north end, and the degree of the north end decided the level of the south end. (7, 407) There are three basic equipment that were used for surveying and sighting, the groma, the chorobates, plus the measuring pole or fishing rod. The groma is a horizontally cross, attached to the point of your offset post, with plumb lines dangling from each one of the four end points. That allows that you sight direct and verticle with respect lines. The chorobates is known as a leveling instrument. It's a table preferably regarding 20 feet long with four the same straight hip and legs attached perpendicularly at each corner. There is a straight line driven on a crosspiece that goes from the lower section of the leg for the bench. Immediately above the straight line there is also a plumb range attached to the bench. There was also a five-foot long groove down the middle of the stand for normal water in case it had been...
